Buddha Mountain has been classified as one of the biggest landmarks on Thailand which bears the biggest Buddha image on a backdrop which is as high as 130 meters and 70 meters wide. The image is 109 meters tall and is officially known as Phra Phuttha Maha Wachira Uttamopat Satsada.

Since public transport will not meet the purpose of transportation to mountains and hilly areas, rent a car from us in Pattaya Downtown at an affordable price and ride through the roads of Pattaya to Buddha mountain while incurring minimal costs.

Its History

It is said that the mountain was used for mining purposes for years during which stones were extracted to build U’tapao Airport during the Vietnam War and later was used for the construction of roads. The mining processes were seized in 1976 by the then king and later on, on his suggestion his children began the 150 million Baht project to commemorate their father’s Golden Jubilee of his accession.

Due to all the activity in the past a shape is said to have immerged naturally which was good enough to be Buddha’s face. The image was finally completed in 1996 and was unveiled on the occasion of completion of King’s 50 years of reign. When the image was carved on the side of the mountain, the gold was inlaid and the task took days to complete.

How was it carved?

The image was carved using laser technology under the assistance of experts from the Department of Geological Resources and Asian Institute of Technology. On addition to Buddha image the place also has big gardens, lotus ponds and an ‘alter’ where the travelers can offer prayers. In addition to all this there is a big parking area plus shops where one can buy food, drinks and other stuff that might be required by those who want to make offering to the Buddha.

As an alternative, there are also kiosks for food and drinks available just across the road.
