Wiang Kum Kam – The Lost City

The ruins of Wiang Kum Kam are located on Lamphun road, southeast of Chiang Mai. These ruins are also known as the lost city which once was an ancient city of King Mengrai. It is one of those special attractions in Chiang Mai which does not cease to amaze its visitors. These excavated ruins offer an exciting journey through the history of the region. Here, the visitor can see several interesting historical structures and items including Buddhist sculptures, pottery and earthenware. Among the ruins, several temples can also be seen. Wiang Kum Kam is an ideal place for one day or a half day visit from Chiang Mai.

History of Wiang Kum Kam

The history of Wiang Kum Kam dates back to 1288 and it was built on the banks of Ping River by the King Mangrai. It was the capital of Lanna Kingdom before it was transferred to Chiang Mai. The whole city was flooded by the Ping River and the whole city was moved to the current location of Chiang Mai. Due successive floods and the earthworks, the abandoned city had got buried forever until 1984 when it was rediscovered accidently. Wat Chang Kham was the main temple of the city which was also discovered along with other structures. These ruins tell the interesting story of its past and attract thousands if tourists every year.

The ruins of Wiang Kum Kam are located just 8 kilometers from Chiang Mai. With a car rental from Chiang Mai, you can easily reach the location of Wiang Kum Kam and can also explore the surrounding area. The site can be visited on any day between 8 am and 5 pm. You can also rent a bicycle to explore the ruins.
