Wat Sri Suphan – The Silver Shrine

Wat Sri Suphan is popular Buddhist temple in Chiang Mai and it is also known as the Silver Temple. Walai market is the traditional silver-making district of Chiang Mai and also, the Wat Sri Suphan is famous for its silver work. The whole temple is covered with silver which makes it really special and unique from the rest of temples. Located in the south of the old walled city, along the Walai Road, pay a visit to the temple with a Chiang Mai car rental at your disposal and enjoy a hassle free ride.

Visiting Wat Sri Suphan

The Sri Suphan was built in 1502 and it has been renovated several times since then. It was founded on the orders of King Mengrai and initially it was named Wat Sri Suphan Aram. The most recent renovation of the temple was started in 2004. Wat Sri Supan is also an important center for silversmith tradition and handicrafts of Chiang Mai. A silversmith school is also located in the temple where you can see an see monks working on silver crafts. Visitors who are interested in Buddhism can o chat with the monks and they can also learn about meditation.

Useful Information

The Wat Sri Suphan is situated at Soi 2, Wualai Road and easily accessible from the city center. It can be visited on any day from 9 am to 5 pm. The meditation lessons are offered on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday between 5:30 pm and 7:30 pm. Women are not allowed to enter in the ordination hall. Visitors must wear appropriate clothes and short dresses are strictly prohibited.
