Wat Chiang Man is the oldest temple in the walled city of Chiang Mai. The construction of the temple was started in 1296 when King Mengrai founded the city and Chiang Mai became the capital of the Lanna Kingdom. The constructions of Wat Chiang Man was finished in 1306. It was the oldest royal temple of the Chiang Mai City. According to the stone inscriptions near the temple’s gate, it was restored in 1471, 1558, 1571 and then in 1581. Today, it houses the Crystal Buddha, one of the greatest treasures of Thailand and many other important statues of Buddha. It is one of the most important Buddhist temples in Thailand and a must visit place in Chiang Mai.

Highlights of Wat Chiang Man

The oldest structure of Wat Chiang Man is the beautiful Chedi called Chang Lom which means the Chedi of Elephants. It is a rectangular structure which is surrounded by 15 stone sculptures of elephants. The temple has two viharn and the larger is really an interesting place which is built in pure Lanna style architecture. It houses the oldest statue of Buddha in Chiang Mai. The large viharn was renovated in 1925. The smaller Viharn is also a very important as it houses two very old statues of Buddha. This Viharn is also built in Lanna style and at its entrance, you’ll find two sculptures of snakes who are guarding it. Wat Chiang Mai also has a library where many old Buddhist scriptures can be found.

Practical Information

Wat Chiang Man is located in the north of the walled city on the Ratchaphakhinai Road. Chang Puak Gate is the nearest gate to the temple. The temple opens every day and it can be visited between 6 am and 5 pm. There is no entry fee.
