Songkhla National Museum

Songkhla National Museum Posted on: 26th February 2016

Songkhla National Museum is among the many places of interest in the city. Located on Wichian Chom Road, the Chinese-style building housing the museum was built back in 1878 by Phraya Sundranuraksa (Net Na Songkhla) – the then deputy governor of Songkhla province. It initially served as the governor’s residence for a short while before becoming the City Hall, a residence of the city’s upper administrative officers. In 1973, the building was declared a National Monument and in 1982, it was opened as a National Museum. Today, Songkhla National Museum is a place to know more about the region’s history, culture, local archeology and folk art.

Discover the History and Culture of Songkhla

Songkhla National Museum features a valuable collection that represents various aspects of the South’s cultural heritage and that of Thailand as a whole. The wide range of exhibits include a remarkable collection of artifacts of the Na Songkhla Family in addition to ancient pottery, furniture, crafts and folk art of the south. Also to be seen are the Siwichai and Thawarawadi artifacts, old Chinese and Thai ceramics, prehistoric finds, art objects and assorted bits of memorabilia. You’ll find several cannons outside, many of which were retrieved from shipwrecks. At the back of the building, there is a courtyard with gates that face the Thale Sap on one side and a stylish staircase on the other side that leads up to the second floor. Though you’ll get to see many interesting things on display inside the Songkhla National Museum, it is the beauty of the building alone that makes the place worthy of a visit.
