Located on the coast of Krabi and bathed by the Andaman Sea, Railay is a peninsula surrounded by high cliffs. These cliffs prevent its access by road and you can reach only by sea. It is one of the must visit destinations in Krabi and a perfect place to get lost for a few days. Railay Beach is an ideal refuge for climbers and backpackers and it has become very popular for tourists who want to explore the coast of Krabi and its beaches but do not want to go to visit other more crowded places such as Phi Phi Islands and Ao Nang. Being a peninsula, it has beaches on both sides which are known as Railay East And Railay West.
Things to Do at Railay
In Railay, you’ll find three beaches with spectacular settings where you can swim, sunbathe and relax or do other activities like snorkeling, kayaking and hiking. It is very famous worldwide for its beaches and rock climbing. Railay is surrounded by numerous cliffs and some of the cliffs are even 700 meters high. If you climb at one of its cliffs, you can enjoy impressive views of the surroundings (do not forget to take some photographs). For climbing, you will need a good pair of shoes. In the middle of the Railay Peninsula, you’ll discover a freshwater lake and you’ll also find monkeys here.
You can easily reach Railay from Ao Nang by the famous longtail boat. It will take about 15-20 minutes to arrive at Railay and will cost around 100 baht. A cheaper alternate would be to rent a car in Krabi and drive to the beach, stopping by whatever that might grab your attention on the way. Railay offers cheap and good accommodation and many shops are located here which rent and sell equipments needed for hiking and rock climbing. Other attraction, you can visit from Railay include Phra Nang Cave and La Esmeralda lagoon.
