Phra Borom That Chaiya is an ancient Cheddi which is located approximately 50 km from Surat Thani and just 4 km from Suan Mokkh. It is situated in the town of Chaiya which is one of the oldest cities in the country. Some historians have also claimed that Chaiya has served as the capital of the region for some time in the past. According to the claims it was the capital of Srivijaya Kingdom but this claim is largely disputed. It is one of the most important Buddhist temples in Thailand as it houses Buddha relics which are highly revered by Thais. The current building of the Phra Borom That Chaiya has been restored several times. Other than the chedi, many other statues and Buddha images are also located here.

The structure of the temple is very old as it is believed to be constructed at least 1200 years ago. Phra Borom That Chaiya was built in the Srivijaya style architecture and the chedi is built around the reconstructed stupa. Two more stupas can be found nearby which are now just piles of bricks. Furthermore, in the courtyard, visitors can admire sculptures and images of Buddha, the wise founder of Buddhism. The National Museum which is located near the temple showcases various artifacts from the history. Phra Borom That Chaiya is one of the most visited attractions by travelers in Surat Thani.

Phra Borom That Chaiya can be visited on any day between 6 am and 5 pm. Wat Suan Mokkh, one of the most famous Buddhist temple in Surat Thani, is also located near the temple and it can be easily visited on the same day trip. As it is a sacred place, so it is advised to wear clothes carefully before visiting the temple. Do not wear short or transparent clothes and cover your shoulders.
