City Walls – The Symbol of Nakhon Si Thammarat’s Old and Rich Roots

The city’s history talks about a fortification when the city was re-founded in 1278 and various restorations have been made. Some restorations were made centuries back in time- 14th, 17th century whereas the most recent were made in 1990 by Department of Fine Arts. Despite all these restorations the old wall line is still present and very much visible. History reveals that at the time of King Narai Maharat’s rule, under the supervision of French architects and engineers, the city wall was constructed in Chateau style. Another interesting incident related to the city wall is that when Chao Phraya Yommarat was elected as regent of Nakhon Si Thammarat, he pulled the bricks from the city wall which at that time was suffering from disrepair and used them to built roads. Thanks to the renovations that have been made to the city wall over the years, it is still well preserved and is considered to be in its original state.
