Khao Chong Khoi Stone Inscription

Dating back to 6/7th century it is the oldest Sanskrit language stone inscription found in Thailand at present. Its Sanskrit inscriptions convey a story where people are asking for shelter from lord Shiva and jungle spirits. The story ends with a saying that if a good person dwells in a village then that community certainly finds happiness and prosperity.

Interesting Facts

-The inscription has a single face and has three parts, the first part has one line, the second part has four lines and the last part contains two lines. -First parts conveys that the inscriptions were being made to show respect to Lord Shiva -Second part says a verse in praise of Lord Shiva and also adds that who so ever will pray here will get the benevolence of the Lord, and -the third part says that good people always make community a better place to be and such people should be praised The message that the inscription tries to bring forth is that one should respect Shiva, who is husband of Durga and when one truly devotes himself to Shiva, he/she is accepted irrespective of the fact where they go. The inscription is said to be constructed by a group of people belonging to Śivaism who were temporarily residing at the place. They knew they were at a strange place where people had different beliefs and customs; hence through the inscription they were trying to convey the message to each other that one should behave properly and rightly so that they can live happily in the given conditions.

Visiting Hours and Admission Fee

Located in “Ban Khok Sathon, Moo 9, Thung Pho, Chulabhorn, Nakhon Sri Thammarat”, it remains open to public the whole week from 8:00 in the morning to 6:00 in the evening and no entry fee is charged.
