Located on Ko Yo near the end of the second part of Tinsulanond Bridge, the Institute for Southern Thai Studies was established in the year 1978 for the study of southern arts and culture. Spread over an area of about 9 acres, the institute was awarded the tourist industry prize by Thailand Tourism Authority in the year 2000 for being the best cultural tourist attraction.
The Institute for Southern Thai Studies is divided into four buildings which are built in the southern architectural style. Each of these buildings is divided into various exhibition rooms (more than 30 rooms in all) that showcase the local art and culture as well as lifestyle of the south. The systematic exhibits also display history, tradition, religion, occupation, handicrafts, folk play along with many other ancient artifacts. In addition, the institute offers seminar rooms, accommodations for visitors and traditional item shops including silverware, KohYor weaving clothes, Yan Lipao handicraft, Panan handicraft, Krajood handicraft and products from coconut shells. Apart from all these interesting exhibitions, the Institute for Southern Thai Studies also has a stunning viewpoint from where beautiful scenery of the aquaculture farms and the Songkhla Lake can be captured.
The Institute for Southern Thai Studies opens everyday from 8:30 AM till 5 PM. For the locals, entrance free costs around 30 Baht for adults and 10 Baht for children.
