Ho Phra Isuan

Posted on: 25th February 2016

Ho Phra Isuan is a Shiva shrine which is the remnant of the time when Hindu gods were worshiped in the region and the population of Hindu Indians was really prominent. Ho Phra Isuan houses Shiva Lingam, bronze image of Natraj- Shiva dancing in circle of fire and idols of Goddess Uma and Lord Ganesha, which are replicas of the originals that are now part of the Nakhon Si Thammarat National Museum. It is interesting to know that the Lingam is estimated to be as old as sixth century A.D.

It was built by Fine arts department in 1966 and hence the building which also holds an altar is a replacement in itself of the original which shrine which fell due to its weather-beaten structure.

Interesting Facts

Ho Phra Isuan is also known as Shiva House; just next to the shrine is a large swing which seems to be the mini replica of ‘Giant Swing in Bangkok’. Since it is a shrine that belongs to the Brahman religion, it is said that the swing was used by Brahmins in their Tri Yampawai and Tri Pawai ceremonies. During these ceremonies men used to swing the top of the Swing in their attempts to get a bag of coins. Due to accidents and fatalities, Tri Yampawai and Tri Pawai ceremonies were seized in 1932 and it is when the Giant Swing was replaced with its replica. The original Swing at present sits in front of Wat Suthat in Bangkok. It is also said that there used be a Brahmin Church but now the swing is all that remains.
