Located in Northern Thailand, Elephant Nature Park is one of the best opportunities for the animal lovers to spend time around one’s favorite animal for this center is a sanctuary for not only elephants but also dogs, cats, buffalos etc. This project was started in 1996 by a lady named Lek Chailert. She was born in 1962 at the tribal village of Baan Lao. Her upbringing amidst nature and her time with her grandfather made her what she is today. It all started when during her childhood, her family helped an elephant who gradually became her companion. As a result she became a regular at helping elephants and began to spend a lot of time with the elephants in the forest.

About Elephant Nature Park

It originally started as ‘Elephant Heaven Nature Park’ in 1996, but in 2003 the place was closed and in its place the ‘Elephant Nature Park’ was started which works in close association with ‘Save Elephant Foundation’. The park is spread in an area of about 250 acres and it accommodates elephants of all age groups ranging from 64 years to new born. Over 37 elephants have been rescued and have been helped in overcoming their distressful experiences and when some fail to trust humans they let the elephants form families so that they can heal. The park at present has blind, orphaned, disabled and rescued elephants in addition to over 400 dogs, fifty buffaloes, 2 horses and 30 cats etc.

Lek Chailert also visits various tribal villages and provides them free clothing and medicines; she also goes deep inside the jungle to help sick elephants and other animals. There are various volunteer programs that are offered at a price so as to derive funds for sustaining the animals’ up keeping.
