Tap Lamu Town

Tap Lamu Town is certainly a small gem in itself and is most popular for Royal Thai Navy Turtle Nursery. Thai waters are home to turtle species of Green, Olive Ridley, Hawksbill and Leatherback turtles which are under threat from human activities like fishing, egg poaching etc. Thailand is known to provide protection to these turtles and this nursery plays a crucial role in ascertaining turtle’s survival.

These turtle species found in Andaman Sea’s waters are either rare or endangered, so what this nursery does is that they collect all the eggs from the nesting sites at a place so as to avoid threats posed by humans, birds and other predators.

When the turtle eggs hatch the hatchlings are fed and are cared for a period of about eight months after which they are allowed to leave for sea. This arrangement makes increases baby turtle’s chances of survival and makes sure that the hatchlings are in a better state to fend for themselves.

Built around a naval base, the town is proud of its Turtle nursery which remains open to public and unlike other navy bases focuses on study, conservation and protection of sea turtles.

In addition to the nursery the town offers good restaurants and since it is a major fishing port one can expect fresh sea food. The place also offers water activities like snorkeling and diving etc plus resorts and 4 star hotels for accommodation.
It has been off global tourism radar in the past as a result its natural beauty is still intact, its offers great cuisines and even the prices charged here are quite reasonable.

How to Reach?

One can reach Tap Lamu Town either through bus or taxi from Phuket International Airport. A bus ride takes 3.5 hours but is economical than the taxis.
