The Jim Thompson House is not as popular attraction as the Grand Palace and temples of Wat Arun or Wat Phra Kaew but still a place worth visiting if you are in Bangkok for 2 days or more. This house belongs to Jim Thompson, an American businessman. This house composed of six traditional homes which were brought from different provinces. These homes are at least two hundred years old. On a tour of Jim Thompson’s house, visitors can see his room, his artwork, his collection and his original furniture. It also has a beautiful garden, a cafe, a restaurant and a shop where you can buy silk products.

About Jim Thompson

Jim Thompson was an architect and a collector born in 1906. During the World War II, he was selected in the US Army. After the World War, he moved to Europe as a strategic part of the army to assist in the operation of the release of Thailand. When the war ended in Thailand, he became interested in the silk fabrics of Thailand. Then he started a company “Jim Thompson – The Thai Silk Company” and started exporting the silk worldwide. During a trip to Malaysia in 1967, he disappeared and never came back. There are many theories behind his vanish, but no evidence was found ever.

Important Information for Travelers

The Jim Thompson House is located at 6 Soi Kasemsan 2, Rama 1 Road, Bangkok. It is open daily between 9 am to 5 pm. Unlike many popular tourist attractions, the Jim Thompson House is not located in the historic center of Bangkok, so it is recommended to rent a car to reach this complex of teak wood house comfortably.

Note: The house can be visited only in groups. Guided tours are also available in English and French.
